The purpose of this personal blog page is to replace the blog I ran at realclearideas.com, and to provide posts that are not immediately relevant to the functioning of omnivalence.com, or any related entities. Specifically, this blog will host posts not immediately relevant to machine learning and artificial intelligence. I am presently trying to decide if the Institution theory related material from the RCI page should be migrated to this blog or the one at omnivalence.
The first cycle of posts for this blog will be a long-planned series on Kochen-Specker and that theorem's consequences for understanding quantum mechanics as a realist theory. In particular, these posts will explore the role and limitations of classical first order logic plays in understanding physical observables given this result, as well as introducing and exploring the neo-realist alternatives provided by the Isham-Doering topos theoretic interpretation.
In order to do this, there will be several preliminary posts describing the necessary physics and logic, before going into the specifics of the Kochen-Specker result. Afterwards, I plan on summarizing the consequences of the result, and various ways this can be reconciled with intuitions about what we want from our physicalist theories.
